Resident Tuition for Undocumented CUNY Students

Q. Who is qualified for resident tuition in CUNY?

A. Both undocumented and permanent resident students qualify for resident tuition at CUNY. Having a work authorization card, doesn't necessarily mead that you qualify but you might. CUNY has two tuition rates. A higher rate for out-of-state students, and a lower scale for New York State residents. In 1981, CUNY took the lead in granting undocumented Students the right to pay the lower resident tuition. That's the same rate paid by U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees and those receiving asylum. Allowing undocumented students to pay resident tuition is now a national trend.

To qualify for resident tuition, an undocumented student must haw lived in New York State for one year in an unlawful status. If you came without legal papers, you start counting the one year from the day you arrived. If you came as a legal visitor, you start counting from the day your stay expired. If you are not sure whether you qualify for resident tuition, see an admission officer at the school you plan to attend.
