Passport Is Proof of Citizenship

Q. Can I petition for my wife using my U.S. passport only, or must I have a certificate of U.S. citizenship? I got derivative U.S. citizenship when my mother and father naturalized. Recently, I returned to my.homeland to marry. My only proof of U.S. citizenship is my U.S. passpor.

A. Your passport is proof that you are a U.S. citizen for all purposes, including petitioning for your wife. Just include a copy of your passport when you file INS form 1-130, Petition for Alien Relative.
