  Passport for Children

Q. Can I get US passports for my children or must I apply for certificates of citizenship for them? My wife and I have been legally separated for one year now and I have legal custody of the two children. I am a naturalized citizen. My wife and two kids are permanent residents.

A. Your kids are US citizens if these three evens happened prior to their turning 18: You naturalized; you separated from your wife and gained legal custody of your kids; they became permanent residents. The order of these does not matter if all occur before they turn 18. If they are citizens, they can get US passports. They do not need certificates of citizenship.
