Amnesty Prospects

Q. I've heard talk that a blanket amnesty is coming for undocumented immigrants. People say congress will pass the law after the November elections. My husband has green card and is about to petition for me. Should I wait for an amnesty rather than having my husband file for me?

A. I believe that Congress will pas an amnesty within the next two years. Still, Vice President Gore has called for amnesty for undocumented immigrants here since 1986. Immigrants' rights advocates will argue for a later date. No one knows for sure what the cutoff date will be and what restrictions Congress will impose on amnesty applicants. And a sharp downturn in the economy could kill the chances of any amnesty.
