Adoptees Are Citizens

Q. I adopted twin girls in 1982. They are permanent residents and will soon be 18. I never told them they were adopted. My husband and I are both citizens. Did our adopted daughters become citizens automatically.

A. Since you adopted your daughters before they they turned 18, they are US citizens. The law changed on Oct. 5, 1978. Since then, adopted children derive citizenship from their adoptive parents.

The easiest and fastest way to get proof of your daughters' citizenship is for them to get US passports. You can also get INS Certificates of Citizenship for your daughters though that isn't necessary. If a passport officer says they need the certificates, the officer is wrong.
