Father Was Burned

A man was going to be away from home for four or five days, and said to his son, "If someone asks you where your father is, tell him that he is out on business. Be sure to tell them clearly."

Thinking that his son was a little foolish, the man wrote his instructions on a piece of paper. After his departure the boy, being afraid of forgetting his father 's words, read the note from time to time.

Three days passed and there was no visitor. So the simple-minded boy thought that the note was useless and burned it.

On the fourth day, a closed friend of his father came by.

"Is your father in?" he asked.

The boy could not find the note and could only say, "No, not here, burned."

The friend was astonished at the bad news and asked again, "When?"

"Yesterday evening, " the boy answered definitely.
