Forsaking His Wife

A pedant married a lady who was very beautiful, talented and learned. He was very infatuated with his wife.

A year later the wife gave birth to a boy. The man was extremely happy and accompanied his wife to her parents' home to stay for a few days.

When he entered his mother-in-law's house, he saw an old woman standing in front of the door. The old woman had a wrinkled face, crooked mouth, was cross-eyed, and doddering with age. Seeing his mother-in-law so ugly, the pedant forsook his wife and went home.

"Tell what fault I have? Why did you forsake me?" the wife asked on parting.

"When I saw your mother the other day, she was very ugly. I am afraid that you will be as ugly as she is in our old age. Tell me, how shall I bear that?" the pedant said. "I forsook you simply for that."
